Consumer Protection
Protecting the interests of consumers is a key part of the Ontario Energy Board’s mandate. We do this in a number of ways, including issuing codes and rules for licensed companies to follow on a variety of consumer-focused issues. The Board has recently initiated a number of regulatory changes to ensure consistent and fair treatment of energy consumers across Ontario.
Our consumer-focused improvements include:
- Regulatory changes related to retail energy contracts
What you should know when considering an energy contract, including your rights under the new Energy Consumer Protection Act, 2010 and the Board’s new rules
- Customer Service changes in the electricity and natural gas sectors
Find out about the new rules regarding arrears payments, disconnections, security deposits and equal monthly payments for electricity consumers and about how the OEB is developing similar rules for gas consumers
- Helping low-income energy consumers
The OEB is augmenting guidelines related to emergency financial assistance, and is developing more flexible customer service rules for low-income energy consumers
